Summary

Hello Fishpondians,

It's time for our September Showcase Challenge!

We're delighted that this month we've organised a Showcase Challenge celebrating the LGBTQ+ community with a queer or human connection scene with guest judge Katie McNeice.

At Fishpond HQ, we're passionate about driving meaningful conversations in the entertainment industry. Representation is at the forefront of our discussions, and we believe it's essential to amplify diverse voices in storytelling. It's not just about casting; it's about recognising and celebrating the incredible talent of queer actors and artists who bring unique perspectives to the stage and screen.

We also want to extend an invitation to queer actors beyond our Fishpond community to submit self-tapes that truly reflect their individuality and creativity. We encourage people from all walks of life to apply and show us what roles they want to represent.

We're also delighted to announce that renowned Irish filmmaker Katie McNeice will be the guest judge for this LGBTQ+ Showcase.

About Katie McNeice

Katie McNeice is an award-winning Writer-Director-Editor known for her identity-driven films, particularly focused on sexuality and gender. She's a Screen Ireland Rising Star, with a recent IFTA nomination for Best Script Film for her debut feature, "WHO WE LOVE," a coming-of-age queer drama. Her LGBT short film "IN ORBIT'' has garnered 58 awards, including recognition at the Galway Film Fleadh and a ZeBBie nomination for Best Short Script from the Writers Guild of Ireland. "LAMBING," the first Irish film about intersex babies and their parents, is funded by IMDb Script to Screen Award and the 2021 Kildare ShortGrass Film Bursary, winning Best Irish Short at the GAZE LGBTQI International Film Festival.

Her arthouse short "WHALE FALL" claimed multiple awards at the Little Cinema Galway Film Challenge 2021 and continues to shine on the festival circuit. Upcoming projects include the Irish language film "FOCAIL BAILE CROÍ (Words Home Heart)," funded by Comórtas Fisín Pitching Competition, Catalyst International Film Festival Screenplay Award, and the 2022 Screen Kerry Short Film Bursary, produced by Maggie Ryan of Escape Pod Media. "WHO WE LOVE" premiered at the 2021 Galway Film Fleadh, earning Katie the Inaugural Rising Talent Award at the Kerry International Film Festival and multiple IFTA nominations. It hit Irish cinemas in the summer of 2023.

Katie is currently involved in a feature adaptation of the award-winning LGBT children's novel "THE DEEPEST BREATH" by Meg Grehan, alongside the neo-noir Irish thriller "NORTH OF NOWHERE," written by Sam Uhlemann and produced by Juliane Wothe of New Stage Films.  With exciting future projects on the horizon, now is a fantastic opportunity to have your tapes seen by Katie and be considered for future auditions.

What's the Challenge?

Feel free to embrace any LGBTQ+ character that resonates with you.
We invite our actors to select an LGBTQ+ monologue that speaks to them and to use it as a canvas to showcase the roles they are passionate about, sending a powerful message to casting directors about the stories they want to bring to life.

Ideas for Adult Actors

We encourage you to select a character that truly speaks to you. Would you like to play a character like the fierce Elektra Abundance Evangelista from "Pose," the quirky David Rose from "Schitt's Creek," the badass Rosa Diaz from "Brooklyn 99," the relatable Lily Iglehart from "Sex Education," or the charming Chiron from "Moonlight"?

Ideas For Child Actors

Young actors may choose a scene that reflects human connections such as friendships, family bonds, mentorships, or community.

**Bonus Tip

Don't forget to add your video clip to your Fishpond profile.  Including a clip on your Fishpond profile will not only showcase your talent to casting directors like Katie but also make you stand out as the perfect fit for their next project. The next time an opportunity arises, they'll be much more likely to remember you and consider you for the role.

What will you win?

Katie will choose her Top 5 submissions and these will be shared with Fishpond's full caster database of over 1000 industry professionals. This includes casting directors in Ireland, the UK, and further afield, directors, producers, theatre companies, production companies, etc. We'll also showcase your talents on social media.

The challenge winners will also receive a Fishpond membership bursary, offering various membership choices ranging from one year to three months, in recognition of their showcase selection.

Audition Instructions:

**Self Taping Tips:**

  • As always, actors are welcome to amend scripts to fit their needs.
  • Readers are welcome if the scene includes another character, but please keep the clip under three minutes in length.
  • If filming on a phone, make sure it is horizontal (landscape) and wipe the lens before you begin.
  • Film in front of a plain background.
  • Whatever the device, the lens should be around eye level, not below or far above you. We recommend using a tripod if you have one.
  • Do not look down the lens—your eye line should be just to the right of the lens (unless your scene specifically calls for you to look into the camera).

Important tip: Turn the phone sideways and wipe the lens! Be sure to read our auditioncam® tips for success.
